Dozens of local law enforcement officers will be on hand at more than 20 Applebee’s restaurants across New York State on Thursday, May 20, but they won’t be enforcing laws or writing tickets. The officers will join forces with Applebee’s employees and assist servers and hosts by performing their various tasks. They also will greet and hold the door for guests, bus tables, and serve food and beverages to customers. In return, Applebee’s customers will have the option to tip the officers, which will directly benefit the more than 47,000 Special Olympics athletes in New York State.
“Applebee’s has been teaming up with local law enforcement officials to support Special Olympics athletes in our own neighborhoods for the past few years,” said Stephanie Griffin, director of Marketing and Public Relations for T.L. BUFFALO, N.Y. – Now here’s a promise -- after nearly 2,000 pancake breakfasts, you won’t get a stomachache, but you might get new uniforms or sports equipment. But that’s only at Applebee’s restaurants across upstate NY and Connecticut. T.L. Cannon Companies, the franchisee for 61 Applebee’s Neighborhood Grill & Bar restaurants in two states, helped local nonprofit groups fundraise more than $1.75 million for their respective organizations in 2009.
Last year, school groups and sports teams flipped flapjacks, other nonprofits dined in at Applebee’s with a percent of the bill benefitting their organizations, and special fundraising nights were held for Make-A-Wish Foundation and Special Olympics chapters. In total, T.L. Cannon’s Applebee’s restaurants hosted more than 2,500 fundraisers for groups, schools and nonprofit organizations. Various events were booked on the company’s community fundraising site www.tlcneighborhood.com.
“In addition to delivering a great dining experience, our Applebee’s restaurants are dedicated to being a good neighbor and that means giving back to the communities where our restaurants operate,” said Matt Fairbairn, CEO, T.L. Cannon Companies. “We were proud to help literally thousands of organizations and even more neighbors last year through the commitment of our staff, support of our guests, and of course, the hard work by the organizations that held fundraisers in our restaurants.”
For the past five years, T.L. Cannon Companies was awarded the National Restaurant Association Good Neighbor Award for its commitment to providing community-based support and fundraising programs. The company also was recognized nationally within Applebee’s system twice as “Applebee’s Neighbor of the Year” in both 2006 and 2009, based on its grassroots support of the neighborhoods in which its restaurants operate.
Applebee’s supported groups, causes, schools and nonprofits in the following ways in 2009:
• Flapjack Fundraisers: Offered exclusively to schools, youth sports or youth service organizations, more than 1,900 pancake breakfast fundraisers were held at Applebee’s. On Saturday and Sunday mornings, Applebee’s restaurant locations welcomed groups for pancakes and bacon. Applebee’s provided the venue, food and beverages for the breakfasts, while the organizations sold tickets and volunteered at the events. Local schools and youth organizations holding Flapjack Fundraisers in 2009 raised more than $1.5 million for their causes.
• Law and Orders for Special Olympics: A fundraiser that has been gaining popularity, Applebee’s restaurants hosted events where local law enforcement officers traded in their badges to serve customers. Officers greeted and held doors for guests, served food and beverages and cleared tables. Applebee’s patrons tipped the officers and the tips benefitted Special Olympics across New York State. More than $47,000 was raised from Law & Orders fundraising events in 2009.
• Make-A-Wish Fundraisers: Various fundraisers at Applebee’s benefitted Make-A-Wish Foundation chapters in New York State and Connecticut. From hosting pancake breakfasts with Santa Claus to the sale of Make-A-Wish car air-fresheners to in-kind donations and other events, more than$120,000 was raised for Make-A-Wish Foundation in 2009.
• Dining to Donate: Nearly 400 nonprofit organizations held Dining to Donate fundraising events at Applebee’s restaurants. Organizations booked their events at www.tlcneighborhood.com and distributed Applebee’s vouchers to their supporters prior to the event. Ten percent of guest checks that accompanied event vouchers were donated back to the charitable nonprofit organizations. Churches, college clubs and other nonprofits took part in Dining to Donate events, raising more than $31,000 in 2009.
Applebee’s also supports education for younger children through the following programs:
• School Restaurant Tours: Open to elementary grades K-5, schools can bring students in for a tour of Applebee’s, learn about job duties, teamwork and the importance of a clean work environment. Students, chaperones and teachers can enjoy a price-fixed lunch, and all students receive a “Junior Applebuddy” certificate with a coupon for a free kids meal for their next visit.
• A is for Applebee’s: An achievement award program, teachers can honor their students’ achievements, whether for academics, attitude or effort. Teachers can order reward cards for a free kids meal at Applebee’s.
• Bookworm Reading Club: Open to students 12 and younger, children can record the books they read on a “Bookworm Club” card. Once a student reads 10 books, they receive a free kids meal with the purchase of an adult meal. Children also receive a detachable bookmark. Requests must be made by local schools or libraries.
• Cool Credit: An achievement program for students 13-18, Cool Credit allows participating schools to reward deserving students with a free appetizer at Applebee’s. Schools can award cards to students based on their own criteria – from leadership and academics to sportsmanship and attendance.

BUFFALO, NY – Great taste or lower calories? At Applebee’s, guests can now have their ‘steak’ and eat it too. The world’s largest casual dining chain recently announced the launch of its groundbreaking menu, featuring five unbelievably tasty entrees, all under 550 calories.
The Unbelievably Great Tasting and Under 550 Calories menu marks a first for casual dining chains, offering guests unexpected lower-calorie options like steak and potatoes or grilled shrimp and pasta with the same powerful flavors and generous portions Applebee’s guests count on.
“With five entrees in Applebee's new Under 550 Calories menu, our guests have the choices they want,” said Stephanie Griffin, director of marketing and public relations for T.L. Cannon Companies. “What’s surprising them is that they don’t have to give up great taste just to get fewer calories.”
In fact, a recent survey of casual dining users posed the question: What would you do if you were president of Applebee’s? One in four said they’d put lower-calorie options on the menu.
“We’ve done that, and we haven’t sacrificed taste to achieve it,” said Griffin.
In restaurants now, the Under 550 menu, along with the company’s Weight Watchers selections, demonstrates Applebee’s ongoing commitment to provide guests a variety of great-tasting choices when dining out. According to NPD Crest, the nation’s leading provider of retail market data, more Americans than ever before – 60 percent – are watching calories when they eat out. NPD also reports that one in four Americans say that restaurants don’t meet their needs for better-for-you food options.
“Applebee’s focuses on offering satisfying choices for every guest, including those who want lower-calorie options,” said Griffin.
The new Under 550 menu is the brainchild of Applebee’s executive chefs Shannon Johnson and Jason C. Amell, who spent more than a year developing the menu lineup. Working with professional nutritionists, they carefully crafted the lower-calorie recipes to be as tasty as the rest of Applebee’s menu.
“We’ve set a new standard with this menu,” said Chef Johnson. “We use great ingredients, rich spices and innovative cooking techniques to create meals that, frankly, are surprising guests. This is a menu that people will order on taste alone. The lower-calories? That’s a bonus.”
Unbelievably Great Tasting and Under 550 Calories items include:
• Grilled Shrimp and Island Rice
Seasoned, grilled shrimp skewers on citrus island rice served with seasonal vegetables.
• Asian Crunch Salad
Grilled chicken breast served over crunchy salad greens, roasted red peppers, sugar snap peas and refreshing cucumbers, finished with Applebee’s tangy Asian vinaigrette and sliced almonds.
• Grilled Dijon Chicken and Portobellos
Marinated chicken breast grilled and topped with roasted red peppers, portobello mushrooms, Dijon sauce and aged cheddar cheese. Served with steamed herb potatoes and seasonal vegetables.
• Asiago Peppercorn Steak
Applebee’s classic 7-ounce sirloin grilled and topped with cracked peppercorn and melted Asiago cheese. Served with steamed herb potatoes and seasonal vegetables.
• Spicy Shrimp Diavolo
A spicy tomato-basil Diavolo sauce with chili-seasoned shrimp tossed with diced vegetables. Served over a warm bed of whole wheat penne pasta and topped with shredded Parmesan.

Buffalo, NY – Local law enforcement officers were on-hand at more than 40 Applebee’s restaurants across New York state on October 28, but they weren’t enforcing laws or writing tickets. Instead, the officers served up food and fun to Applebee’s customers, working hard to earn ‘tips’. In total, Applebee’s restaurants raised more than $22,000, directly benefitting the more than 46,000 Special Olympics athletes in New York State.
“Fundraisers like Law & Orders at Applebee’s are critical to the success of our program,” said Renee Snyder, director of development for Special Olympics. “Because there is no cost to our Special Olympics athletes to participate, fundraising supports the cost for uniforms, competition, equipment and travel. We’re so grateful to Applebee’s and local law enforcement officers for helping to drive our program.”
The officers joined forces with Applebee’s employees and assisted by holding the doors open for and greeting guests, serving beverages, cleaning off tables, and delivering food to customers. In return, Applebee’s customers had the option to tip the officers to support local Special Olympics athletes.
“Law and Orders night at Applebee’s was great to be a part of, and we’re proud to support Special Olympics in New York State,” said Stephanie Griffin, director of marketing and public relations, T.L. Cannon Companies. “This annual event with Special Olympics and local law enforcement is an easy way we can all support these incredible athletes right in our own neighborhoods.”

BUFFALO, N.Y. – T.L. Cannon Companies, the franchisee for Applebee’s Neighborhood Grill & Bar restaurants in New York and Connecticut, was recently recognized for supporting local neighborhoods and communities. The group won the 2009 New York State Restaurant Association's award for its community-based outreach programs.
The Good Neighbor Award recognizes restaurants for outstanding community service in their communities. This is the fourth consecutive year Applebee’s was honored.
T.L. Cannon also won Applebee’s coveted “Neighbor of the Year” award, among approximately 50 other Applebee’s franchisees nationwide. That award recognizes the Applebee’s group that has demonstrated the greatest commitment to serving its communities throughout the year. Last year, T.L. Cannon supported nonprofit and community-based organizations with more than $1.6 million in donations and fundraising activities throughout upstate New York and Connecticut.
“We’re honored to be recognized by the New York State Restaurant Association and Applebee’s Services, Inc. for our efforts, but this award really belongs to our more than 4,000 employees across both states,” said Matt Fairbairn, CEO, T.L. Cannon Companies. “Day in and day out, our staff, managers and leadership teams come together to support non-profit organizations in our neighborhoods.”
T.L. Cannon/Applebee’s invites groups to choose among a variety of fundraising options that can be booked on its community site www.tlcneighborhood.com. One program, the Flapjack Fundraiser, helped schools, sports teams and youth service organizations raise more than $1.2 million last year. Applebee’s provides the venue and food for the breakfasts; the organization sells tickets and provides event volunteers.
“Last year we held more than 1,500 Flapjack Fundraiser breakfasts. Area youth raising money for their schools and sports programs rolled-up their sleeves and volunteered to serve 120,000 people pancakes,” Fairbairn said. “This is just one of the programs we are proud to offer in the community.
The group also supports the Make-A-Wish Foundation and Special Olympics through in-restaurant fundraisers, raffles, staff dress down days and more, and offers multiple education-based programs through its Education Collaboration initiative.

MIDDLETOWN, N.Y. – Mr. Met was all smiles last week and this time it had nothing to do with baseball, the New York Mets or the tasty Applebee’s Realburgers. Instead, Mr. Met visited the Applebee’s in Middletown, posing for pictures with adoring fans all to benefit the Make-A-Wish Foundation of Hudson Valley.
For more than an hour, Mr. Met smiled with little league teams, families, children and adults alike, as their pictures were taken and autographed by the beloved mascot. Fans donated $5 to Make-A-Wish for their token photos raising $150 and in 2009, the Middletown Applebee’s has donated more $3,000 to the organization through various fundraisers.
“Mr. Met’s visit was truly a highlight for our restaurant, but it means even more to the children and families supported by Make-A-Wish Foundation,” said Mike Morrone, general manager, Applebee’s Neighborhood Grill and Bar in Middletown. “The hard work and generosity of our Middletown Applebee’s patrons and staff has raised more than $3,000 for Make-A-Wish in 2009. We’re pleased to support such an important cause.”
Applebee’s restaurants across New York State and Connecticut also take a hand-on approach with many Make-A-Wish fundraisers, children and their families. Through the sale of car air fresheners to patrons, staff dress down days and in-restaurant raffles, employees, managers and customers alike team up to raise funds and sponsor wishes for children with life-threatening medical conditions. Restaurants host complimentary “wish dinners” bringing children and their family members together, complete with themed decorations and gifts from the restaurant team relating to their wishes. For more information on the Make-A-Wish Foundation program at Applebee’s, visit www.tlcneighborhood.com.

BUFFALO, N.Y. - At Applebee's Neighborhood Grill & Bar, back-to-school offers more fundraising opportunities for students and parents than the French have fries. Sports teams can flip flapjacks, parents groups can hold dinner meetings with part of the bill going back to their organizations, and elementary schools can visit the restaurants and learn about jobs in the food service industry. There's even a program offering free meals for academic performance.
Last year alone, T.L. Cannon Companies, the franchisee for 62 Applebee's Neighborhood Grill & Bar restaurants across upstate New York and Connecticut, helped local non-profit groups raise more than $1.6 million through various fundraising efforts. Most of those efforts were geared toward schools and youth.
Because of its strong commitment to local communities, Applebee's is helping local schools, clubs and sports teams get off to a smart start this school year through various fundraising and educational programs.
"Supporting education is an important part of being a good neighbor," said Matt Fairbairn, CEO, T.L. Cannon Companies. "It's a great way to give back and our neighborhood teams find it incredibly rewarding."

• Dining to Donate: Available to any 501 (C) (3) nonprofit organization. Organizations book their event at participating restaurants and distribute Applebee's vouchers prior to the event. Ten percent of guest checks that accompany event vouchers are donated back to the charitable organization.
Applebee's also supports education for younger children through the following programs, details of which can be found on www.tlcneighborhood.com:
• School Restaurant Tours: Open to elementary grades K-5. Schools can bring students in for a tour of Applebee's, learn about job duties, teamwork and the importance of a clean work environment.
